Whoopi Goldberg Calls American Idol the Downfall of Society
Caryn Elaine Johnson, or Whoopi Goldberg as she is known and loved professionally by countless fans, is a great actress, comedian, and author. She’s been featured in many films and has skits that have everyone laughing out loud. However, the 67-year-old TV personality recently had some terrible things to say about TV, and fans are backing off of the support train for her.
Whoopi Goldberg Blames TV
Most recently, fans were outraged with the beloved actress and comedian because of her harsh commentary on TV. She says society is on a downfall and blames ABC’s American Idol for that fall. As she explained on The View, a popular daytime talk show hosted by women, including Whoopi, Americans have become “too judgy,” and the singing TV challenge is to blame.
Goldberg Rationalizes and Reasons
Whoopi has talked about the show in the past, even though ABC cuts her paychecks, but she doesn’t seem to care about that too much. She says that when a person has the power to judge another human being, that’s when things go amok. She explains that everyone is inherently judgy by nature, and shows like American Idol that gives us and the general public the chance to do it openly is a recipe for disaster for society overall.
Judgment Is to Blame
Since the earliest days of TV broadcasts, competition shows have filtered through the public, so it’s nothing new. It’s been around a while – that inherent ability to judge openly and invite judges to do so and the audience to participate. American Idol is about the public deciding whether a person is worthy or not, which is too much power – it breeds society’s downfall, according to Whoopi Goldberg.
So, can the downfall of society be blamed on American Idol and similar competition shows, as Whoopi Goldberg claims? Perhaps – at least according to her.
