Barbie Officially Becomes the Highest-Grossing Film of 2023

The Super Mario Bros. movie has officially been dethroned by Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, released in July. Since its premiere, the hit movie has steadily been climbing to the top of the box office charts. Take a look at the other cinematic masterpieces that 2023 offered.

Barbie’s Huge Success

2023 has been a big year for cinema lovers. Some of the movies that ranked at the global box office were the final chapter of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the 10th movie in the Fast and Furious saga, The Little Mermaid, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

There was one movie that definitely stood out – the Super Mario Bros. movie. However, Nintendo’s film was quickly replaced by Barbie as it took the crown of the biggest financial win only a month and a half after its release. It has now brought an impressive $1.381 billion at the global box office, while Super Mario Bros. reached $1.359 billion. Another big seller in 2023 that came in third at the box office is Oppenheimer, released on the same day as Barbie.

The Records Barbie Broke

Barbie has set many records ever since it was released. At the beginning of August, it became the highest-grossing film directed by a woman. It also beat 2017’s Wonder Woman, raking in $822.9 million. In addition, It had the biggest box office opening weekend of the year. The budget was $145 million, but took home $155 million.

It has also seen the biggest opening for a movie about a toy, the biggest opening ever for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, and the biggest opening weekend for a film that isn’t a sequel, remake, or superhero movie.
