Squid Games Director Explains Why Seong Gi-Hun Dyed Hair Red for Season 2
Season 1 of Squid Game left us with quite a few questions. Luckily, season two is just around the corner and will hopefully give us the answers we need. Hwang Dong-hyuk, who directed popular series, recently explained why Seong Gi-Hun dyed his hair red in the last episode.
The Iconic Red Hair Scene Explained
If you have been living under a rock and haven’t seen the South Korean Netflix hit Squid Game, we highly recommend you do. The series follows 456 contestants who, driven by their desire to win 45.6 billion won, compete in children’s games where only the winner survives.
In the last episode, the winner and main character, Seong Gi-Hun, played by Lee Jung-Jae, goes into a hair salon where he dyes his hair red. It was one of the many surprises the show had to offer, and fans are still trying to find the reason behind it.
Squid Game: The Challenge
On February 1, Netflix gave us a peek at season two, and Seong Gi-Hun still had red hair. Back in 2021, director Hwang Dong-hyuk explained the meaning of this scene. When creating the series, he tried to think of a color that Gi-Hun would never choose for his hair, and the craziest color was red. He said he chose this color to express the main character’s inner anger.
This was revealed sometime after Netflix announced they were casting new contestants for season two of Squid Game: The Challenge, a real-life version of the original series where everything is the same except that people don’t die when they get eliminated. Anyone in the world can apply for the chance to participate and win the prize of $4.56 million, although it’s easier said than done. Those on the show won’t get the complete Squid Game experience though, as they’ll be replaced by actors in some of the more dangerous moments of the game.
