The film Memento was a mind-boggling one by director Christopher Nolan. It’s well known for its broken storytelling and misplaced timelines. The masterpiece of the 2000s follows Leonard Shelby in his quest for answers. The main character suffers from a rare form of amnesia in which his brain is impaired in encoding new memories. What makes Leonard’s journey easier is the fact that he knows someone with the same condition Sammy Jankis, and the system Jankis adopted to make a somewhat decent life for himself.
Real-Life Experience Helped the Star in Memento
As it turns out, Stephen Tobolowsky, who plays Sammy Jankis, an amnesiac in the movie, was selected for this role because of his real-life experience. He suffered from temporary memory loss and explained that his experience with it might have helped him immensely to become even better in his role. He explained that his condition made him better understand the entirety of having amnesia and what it’s like to live with it.
Visuals Become Cultural Tropes
The film closely followed Leonard Shelby who continuously tattooed his body with different snaps of memory so he could be reminded at a later point. The visuals quickly turned into popular cultural tropes. While the main character searches for justice, the movie jumps back and forth between different periods. Tobolowsky explains that since he used to wake up in the middle of the night and not remember why he was in a particular place, he was the best actor to play the role. Although the condition in Memento was far more severe, the actor’s experience certainly made him more self-aware.
Stephen Tobolowsky explained why he had temporary memory loss. It was actually when he had an operation for kidney stones and experimental medications were used to calm the after-effects. He relays that it never actually stopped the pain, but it made him forget about it. When he was released to go home, he was still under the influence which had him forgetting everything – the perfect aid for his Memento role, as it turns out.
Christopher Nolan Reveals the Best Spot in the Cinema to Watch Oppenheimer
Now that Christopher Nolan’s epic new film Oppenheimer is on the big screen, the director has shared his thoughts about where the best seats to book are when getting a ticket. Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy has recommended people watch the movie on the big screen at a cinema, so getting the right seats seems to be important.
Oppenheimer Is Meant for the Cinema
When thinking about the cinema experience of Oppenheimer, people should consider that the movie has a run time of three hours. This means that plenty of snacks and drinks should be stocked up before going in. However, one shouldn’t go too far on the drinks to avoid having to go to the bathroom during the movie and squeezing past everyone’s legs to block their view. Missing big plot points is something most people don’t like.
Nolan’s advice on where to see Oppenheimer says that it will be best viewed in an IMAX cinema, in the middle, about a third of the way down from the top. As the director shared his thoughts on the best seat, he also stated that a middle seat in any row would be better. While that may mean doing some row-counting and math when picking a seat, the spectacle should definitely be worth it.
Nolan Prefers IMAX Cinemas
According to Nolan, sitting in the middle of a row a third of the way from the top would be above the center line, where the viewpoint is great and the sound is perfect. The director mentioned that the low end in particular, where the base notes are, is very impressive. Oppenheimer is available to watch on regular cinema screens and IMAX screens, but Christopher Nolan has praised IMAX on numerous occasions, stating that it makes movies even more immersive.
Nolan apparently likens IMAX to 3D without the glasses, explaining that a viewer would get so immersed in the image that the screen would disappear. According to the director, IMAX film cameras and projectors offer a format that’s the closest to how eyes see the world. This makes a clear case to book a ticket for an IMAX cinema, especially if the seat is chosen wisely.
Another big movie in cinemas that’s currently circulating is Barbie. Some people have already made sure to watch both movies because of the unexpected but delightful difference in terms of genres. Most people fall into one of two camps, those who would watch Barbie first and those who would go with Oppenheimer first. It sure would make for an interesting experience to watch the two movies one after the other!
